How to hang wind chimes

Choose a secure hanging point, allow room for movement and consider the breeze. A practical guide to hanging wind chimes in your own space.

How to hang wind chimes

Wind chimes begin with a place to hang and a little room to move. Choose a secure support, follow the instructions for the particular chime and its hardware, and leave enough clearance that moving parts cannot strike a window, wall or another object.

Choose a secure hanging point

Look for a support suitable for the weight and arrangement of the selected chime. A porch beam, an appropriate bracket or another secure fixing can each offer a possibility. Check the fixing and the surface it attaches to; the chime and the hanging hardware both need to be appropriate for the setting. If you are unsure about a fixture, get suitable installation advice rather than assuming a decorative hook will hold any instrument.

Give the chime room to move

Consider the complete hanging length and the space around the moving elements. Leave clearance from glass, a wall, neighboring objects and places where people walk. Check the arrangement at rest and consider how it may move when air passes through it. A photograph alone cannot establish the clearance needed for a particular model.

Notice the breeze

The way air moves through a location affects how often a chime sounds. A sheltered corner and an open porch can offer different experiences. Find a position where you enjoy listening, and consider other people who share the space, including neighbors. You can adjust the location if the sound is too frequent or too prominent for its setting.

Match the placement to the item

Check whether the selected chime is intended for indoors, a sheltered location or outdoor exposure. Do not assume that every item is weatherproof because its photograph was taken outside. Follow its own care information for wind, rain and seasonal storage. Different constructions and hanging arrangements need different treatment.

Check it from time to time

Look over the hanging point and moving elements periodically, and follow the model’s care guidance. Make sure the chime still has enough space and remains securely supported. If a fitting or component looks worn, address it before continuing to use the item.

Make the invitation your own

A chime can become something you notice while making tea, opening a window or spending a little time outside. Choose a place that feels comfortable for you and the people around you, then let it find its place in an ordinary day.
